Team Fortress 2 Trailer - Must See!

The seamless blend of comical Pixar-like animation coupled with real-world physics is an impressive sight to see in action, even if you’re not interested PC games. I haven’t seen animation this fluid and responsive in any multiplayer shooter (or most games at all) yet. Screenshots don’t do this game justice, watch the video.

Frank Zappa on Crossfire (1986)

“The biggest threat to America today is not communism; it’s moving America towards a fascist theocracy and everything that has happened during the Reagan administration is steering us right down that pipe.”

Great video.

Flickr’s Geotagging Reviewed by Thomas Hawk

“Ok, so Michael Arrington leaked it a few weeks back and now it’s official. Today Flickr launched geotagging. My first impression? It’s pretty damn impressive.”

This is REALLY cool, anyone with a Flickr account has got to try it out. Too bad Yahoo!’s satellite imagery sucks so bad… They need to buy some Google photography.

US Iraq War Deserters Speak Out

This article contains some very graphic, shocking commentaries by 4 U.S. Army deserters now living in Toronto, exiles from their country. A few excerpts:

Anderson shakes his head at the memory. “I’m already not agreeing with this war. I’m not going to kill innocent people. I can’t kill kids. That’s not the way I was raised.” He says he started to look around at the ruined cityscape and the injured Iraqis, and slowly began to understand the Iraqi response. “If someone did this to my street, I would pick up a weapon and fight. I can’t kill these people. They’re not terrorists. They’re 14-year-old boys, they’re old men. We’re occupying the streets. We raid houses. We grab people. We send them off to Abu Ghraib, where they’re tortured. These are innocent people. We stop cars. We hinder everyday life. If I did this in the States, I’d be thrown in prison.”

In addition to the abuse of prisoners, the regularity with which civilians were killed at checkpoints confounded the young marine. “My friends have been ones who’ve done that, and after the event it’s always, ‘Oh, so and so is a little down today – he killed a guy in front of his kids.’ Or, ‘He killed a couple of kids.’ These marines that had to do that were my friends, who I talked to every day. It’s hard knowing that your best friend had to kill innocent people.”

NSA Wiretapping Whistleblowers Found Dead in Italy and Greece

“Two whistleblowers, one in Italy, one in Greece, uncovered a secret bugging system installed in cell phones around the world. Both met with untimely ends. The resultant scandals have received little press in the United States, despite the profound implications for American critics of the Bush administration.”

A rare glimpse into the real world of international espionage and manipulation…

Announcing the Birth of Chumby

The Chumby

Favorite hardware hacker Bunnie Huang gave this year’s FOO Campers a sneak peek of the latest in cool gadgets: the chumby. The chumby is a low-cost, wifi-enabled information delivery device that’s so appealing you’ll want to keep one close.

Chumby’s team of hardware hackers wanted this device to be fun and open, the anti-iPod. While iPod has a clean look and expensive molded plastic, it’s not very accessible. The Chumby is meant to be personalized. If you’re crafty, you can redesign it with a seam ripper; if you’re a hacker, it’s all open source inside.

One you’ve plugged in your chumby, it connects to your home network via wifi. Select “Trust the chumby” and it will autodiscover. Once you’ve registered online and picked from a selection of free widgets, the chumby displays a Flash stream of whatever you’ve configured - weather, news feeds, alarm clock, movies, pictures, stock tickers, etc.

Damn that sounds cool! Where can I pre-order one of these?

One Year Later: A Comprehensive Katrina Timeline

The Water is Rising

To mark the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the White House is planning a “public relations blitz” to counteract the charges that it bears some responsibility for the reconstruction mess. This timeline counteracts the spin with facts, documenting all the key events over the last year.

NEW ORLEANS “DESCEND[S] INTO ANARCHY”: “Storm victims were raped and beaten, fights and fires broke out, corpses lay out in the open, and rescue helicopters and law enforcement officers were shot at as flooded-out New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday. ‘This is a desperate SOS,’ the mayor said.” [AP]

CONDOLEEZZA RICE GOES SHOE SHOPPING: “Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dollars on some nice, new shoes (we’ve confirmed this, so her new heels will surely get coverage from the WaPo’s Robin Givhan).
